2025 Europe CCUS Project Updates
Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in Europe is advancing at an unprecedented pace and has rapidly become a central pillar of the region’s decarbonization strategy. By April 2025, Europe counts 381 planned and operational CCUS projects, marking a strong annual growth of 70 new initiatives. The United Kingdom leads with 105 projects, followed by Norway, France, Denmark, and the Netherlands, while cross-border collaboration has expanded to 22 projects, signaling the emergence of integrated CO₂ transport and storage networks across the continent.
This momentum is driven by clear EU-level policy direction—particularly the 2024 Industrial Carbon Management Strategy, which targets 50 million tonnes of annual CO₂ storage capacity by 2030—and robust financial support mechanisms such as CEF Energy. Flagship infrastructure developments like Northern Lights, CO₂ Highway Europe, and Prinos not only demonstrate technical viability but also enable open-access CO₂ handling systems essential for decarbonizing Europe’s hardest-to-abate industries.
